Boys Varsity Tennis · Boys Tennis Wins Two, Drops One, at Mukwonago

West Bend East High School 2nd 0

A long and finally dry day on Friday brought hours of tennis for the West Bend East Suns in Mukwonago. The Suns played clean and solid tennis in dispatching the Rufus King Generals 6-1 and the Wilmot Panthers 7-0. Two very strong matches were played at one doubles by Christian Ketter and Michael Conklin. Freshmen Owen Schmidt picked up the first singles win of his career, and Aidan Schmidt and Nathan Meyer “fenced” a number of overheads. Schmidt and Meyer carried the partnership into Mukwonago’s neighboring fields, teaming up to pick up garbage for Meyer’s APES course. And at three doubles Trey Larson picked up a number of aces.

The match of the day occurred against Mukwonago. While the Suns dropped the decision, they were far more competitive than one might have expected given Mukwonago’s previous scores. Alex Schaetz won his third match of the day. After dropping a close first set, Schaetz played an extremely mentally tough and strategic second set and tiebreaker to win at one singles. While Dylan Polster ended up dropping his match, he played a brilliant and offensive second set and tiebreaker to push his opponent to a supertiebreaker. Trey Larson came back from being down 4-1 in the first set to beat a very strong three singles from Mukwonago, and Preston Reiner exhibited great focus in pushing his opponent to his limits in the second set. Most importantly, the East boys represented their schools and families well, fighting for everything and exhibiting sportsmanship.

The doubles matches were a bit more lopsided, but the Suns still showed progress in terms of point progressions, footwork, and body language.

Preston Reiner is pictured during his second win of the day against Wilmot.
